Introducing Preservé™ by Motiva Breast Augmentation

Specialist Plastic Surgeon Dr Mark Hanikeri has completed accreditation to perform Preservé breast augmentation, a technique that uses the Motiva® SmoothSilk® Ergonomix2® breast implant, which has recently become available in Australia and is included on the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods (ARTG).

The technique can only be performed by plastic surgeons who have completed Motiva’s Preservé™ certification. As at 30 October 2026, Dr Hanikeri is the only surgeon in Western Australia accredited to offer it.

Preservé™ is not suitable for everyone. Whether it may be an option for you can only be determined through a thorough consultation with Dr Hanikeri.

What is the Preservé™ technique?

Preservé™ is a breast augmentation technique developed by Motiva®. It aims to place the implant while disturbing as little of the natural breast tissue as possible.

In a traditional breast augmentation, the surgeon creates a pocket for the implant by separating tissue. With Preservé™, the surgeon uses purpose-designed instruments in three main steps:

1. A narrow channel is created using a specialised separating instrument.
2. The existing tissue is gently and gradually stretched using a small inflatable balloon.
3. The Ergonomix2® implant is placed through an insertion sleeve.

The approach is designed to reduce disruption to the surrounding tissues and may allow a smaller incision. Dr Hanikeri will discuss incision size, placement and what this may mean for you during your consultation.

Who may be suitable?

Preservé™ is offered to selected patients only. Suitability depends on a range of individual factors, including:

  • your breast anatomy, tissue and skin quality
  • the implant size and shape that would suit your frame
  • any previous breast surgery
  • your general health and medical history
  • your goals and expectations.

Breast augmentation is only performed for patients aged 18 and over. If Preservé™ is not suitable for you, Dr Hanikeri will talk you through other options that may be more appropriate.

What to expect

As with all cosmetic surgery in Australia, there are a number of steps before any decision is made:

  • GP referral – a referral from your GP or another medical practitioner is required before your first consultation.
  • Two consultations – you will have at least two pre-operative consultations, at least one of them with Dr Hanikeri in person.
  • Cooling-off period – there is a minimum seven-day cooling-off period after your second consultation before you can confirm your surgery.
  • Written information – you will receive written information on the procedure, risks, recovery, and an itemised quote.

Recovery varies from person to person. Dr Hanikeri will give you individual guidance on recovery time, return to work and exercise, and your post-operative care. Cosmetic breast augmentation does not attract a Medicare rebate.

Risks and important information

All surgery carries risks, and Preservé™ is no exception. Possible risks of breast implant surgery include bleeding, infection, poor wound healing, changes to breast or nipple sensation, asymmetry, capsular contracture (hardening around the implant), implant rupture or movement, and the need for further surgery.

Breast implants are not lifetime devices and may need to be removed or replaced in the future. Breast implants have also been associated with a rare type of lymphoma called BIA-ALCL. The Therapeutic Goods Administration provides information on breast implant safety, and patients receiving implants are invited to join the Australian Breast Device Registry.

Dr Hanikeri will discuss all risks relevant to you in detail at your consultations.

Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. Before proceeding, you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified medical practitioner.
